In the past, I have often had problems watching a screen production of a favorite book/series of mine. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency television series. Mma Ramotswe (Precious) is superbly played by Jill Scott, but to me, the stand-out performance is Anika Noni Rose as Mma Makutsi (Grace). Sinopsis: Una mujer de Botswana crea la primera agencia de detectives del país dirigida por una mujer. 1 Ladies Detective Agency - Pilot Episode. Matekoni (Lucian Msamati) busy at his auto repair shop. 1 Ladies Detective Agency - Episodio piloto (TV) es una película dirigida por Anthony Minghella con Jill Scott, Lucian Msamati, Anika Noni Rose, Idris Elba. The roads are dusty, the houses are modest, and the cars look like the type which would keep Mr. I am struck by the realistic “look” of the episodes… no slick Hollywood gloss-overs here! The cattle you see are not corn-fed, “beefed-up Hollywood” animals. The African (Botswana) setting is phenomenal. HBO has not added (again my opinion!) their almost-perfunctory nudity and sex scenes… which totally delights me. This HBO series was a collaboration with the BBC, and it shows! The episodes are quite true to Alexander McCall Smith’s mystery books, except for the addition of a secondary character (hair dresser) who, to me, is a nice addition. (I emphasize that this is only my opinion! I consider Alexander McCall Smith one of today’s best storytellers.) While I have them listed as Cozy Mystery books, I have to say that in my opinion, they are more beautiful, character-driven pieces of fiction> in which the “mystery part” of the novel is secondary. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency mystery books. The DVD contains 2 discs with 3 episodes on each disc and no extras beyond English subtitles.I should preface this entry by saying that I absolutely love Alexander McCall Smith‘s No. It's only a shame they didn't feel audience figures were high enough to make further series from the books. This DVD is staying in my permanent collection. The location shots were superb throughout and the music made me want to visit this quaint little place in Botswana and hug the locals!Įach episode contains a plot of it own with some other storylines running in the background throughout the series which make this a joy to watch. With a host of supporting actors, all doing a splendid job, I watched every episode from start to finish within a day and then watched them all over again! Lucian Msamati play Mr JLB Matekoni (we never find out what his initials stand for) the proprietor of Speedy Motors and Mma Ramotswe's love interest and good friend. The two women are completely different in character yet they develop an astonishing bond which is a joy to watch. Anika Noni Rose plays the very serious Mma Grace Makutsi, the secretary, who gets promoted to Assistant Detective during the series. Jill Scott is perfectly cast as Mma Precious Ramotswe owner of The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency in Botswana (yes, it's also the ONLY ladies' detective agency, so it can get away with its claim of being number one). From the first episode I was truly hooked. Having read a book in the series I was curious to see how the stories would be translated to the small screen which led to me purchasing the DVD of the TV series.
